SWeATSHOPS
STARTER IDEA: What are these images about?
Explain what is happening? What do we know about this form of production? Where might we tend to find them? Sweatshops are clothing factories where workers (mostly women): • get a very low wage • have to work long hours • work in poor, often dangerous, conditions • are treated badly by their employers |
What would it be like to be a sweatshop worker?
ACTIVITY: Imagine you are a worker at a sweatshop.
Write a diary entry detailing your day at work, what you are living like, your state of mind, are you going to be able to afford your next meal, etc.
Write a diary entry detailing your day at work, what you are living like, your state of mind, are you going to be able to afford your next meal, etc.
ACTIVITY: Look at the qualities required for a sweatshop worker from a business owners point of view.
Try and order them using a Diamond 9. Willing to work for low pay. Able to work long hours and is physically fit. Local to the area. Previous experience with factory work and mass production. Willing to work in poor conditions. A leader who is educated. Needs the money to support their family. Has no qualifications and zero job prospects. Happy to follow strict rules. ACTIVITY: Draw the outline of a person. Around the outline write down the qualities on the Diamond 9 activity and at least 5 of your own. Explain why you chose these! If you were running a business, what qualities would your staff need to have? PLENARY: Draw up a list of the potential advantages and disadvantages of using Sweatshop’s for a business and for the workers. |
