NIKE & GLOBALISATION
STARTER IDEA: Name the sportspeople. Why might they be on my screen?
An American Multinational Corporation with it’s headquarters in Oregon. Founded in 1964 the company began by selling Japanese products in the US. They made $8,000. Now the company operates in 170 countries, has more than 40,000 employees, 600 factories and is worth over $85 billion. THINK: Why has NIKE chosen to go global? What benefits might it bring to the company? |
THE idea of global trade dynamics
•The result of uneven distribution of materials and resources across the world.
•No single country has everything it needs so has to trade with others. •In general MEDC’s import low-value goods from LEDC’s. •The most valuable trade happens between MEDC’s. •Often LEDC’s do not trade between each other as they have similar products to offer. |
NIKE's Advertising
ACTIVITY: Watch the Nike advert.
Is the advert appealing to you and why? How does this advert show Nike’s products? Why have they chosen to film in this way? Why might Nike not want to discuss their manufacturing of their products? ACTIVITY: Watch 'Behind the Swoosh' and see how Nike operate globally. Begin to think about the location of production, worker's conditions, worker's wages and Nike's practice. THINK: Is this fair and moral? Are Nike a success or a failure? |
